First lesson – Welcome aboard!

So you want to improve your English, do you ? Well, you’ve come to the right place.
But why bother learning English at all ?
Here are a few reasons: it’s the language of business, commerce and technology.
Politicians and diplomats from all over the world speak to each other in English.
It is the first or second language of more than one billion people,
and another billion or so are learning it at this very moment.
English is also the main language of the global IT insdustry and the media.
And it is also a major medium for publishing, adverstising and science.
Last but not least, it has one of the world’s richest and most varied bodies of literature.
Is this bad news for other major languages like Spanish, French, Arabic and Chinese?
Not really. First, English is pretty illogical – there is no ham in a hamburger and no pine (or apple) in a pineapple.
And pronunciation can be a nightmare – as you surely know!
Sentences like « The soldier decided to desert his dessert in the desert »
can drive even the hardiest learners to distraction !
But when all’s said and done, English may be the victim of its own success.
So many people in so many places now speak their own variety of the language
that native speakers can find themselves at a disadvantage.
English, like Latin before it, no longer belongs to its country of origin.

Un peu d’anglais.

The umbrella Man	L’homme au parapluie
I’m going to tell you about a funny thing that happened to my mother and me yesterday evening.	Je vais vous raconter une drôle d’histoire qui nous est arrivée hier soir, à ma mère et à moi.
I am twelve years old and I’m a girl.	J’ai douze ans et je suis une fille.
My mother is thirty-four but I am nearly as tall as her already	Ma mère à trente-quatre ans, mais je suis presque aussi grande qu’elle déjà.
Yesterday afternoon, my mother took me up to London to see the dentist.	Hier après-midi ma mère m’a emmenée à Londres voir le dentiste.
He found one hole.	Il a trouvé une carie.
It was in a back tooth and he filled it without hurting me too much.	C’était une dent du fond et il l’a plombée sans me faire trop de mal.
After that, we went to a café.	Après cela nous sommes allées dans un salon de thé.
I had a banana split and my mother had a cup of coffee.	J’ai pris un banana split et ma mère a pris une tasse de café.
By the time we got up to leave, it was about six o’clock.	Quand nous nous sommes levées pour partir, il était à peu près six heures.
When we came out of the café it had started to rain.	Lorsque nous sommes sorties du salon de thé il avait commencé à pleuvoir.
‘We must get a taxi, my mother said’.	“Il faut que nous prenions un taxi” a dit ma mère.
We were wearing ordinary hats and coats, and it was raining quite hard.	Nous portions des chapeaux et des manteaux ordinaires et il pleuvait très fort.
‘Why don’t we go back into the café and wait for it to stop ?’ I said.	“Pourquoi nous ne retournons pas au salon de thé en attendant que ça s’arrête ?” ai-je dit.
I wanted another of those banana splits.	Je voulais encore un de ces banana splits.
They were gorgeous.	Ils étaient formidables.
‘It isn’t going to stop’, my mother said. ‘We must get home’	“Cela ne va pas s’arrêter” a dit ma mère. “Il faut que nous rentrions à la maison”.
We stood on the pavement in the rain, looking for a taxi.	Nous étions sur le trottoir sous la pluie, nous cherchions un taxi.
Lots of them came by but they all had passengers inside them.	Il en passait beaucoup mais ils avaient tous des clients.
‘I wish we had a car with a chauffeur’, my mother said.	“J’aimerais avoir une voiture avec un chauffeur”, a dit ma mère.
Just then, a man came up to us.	Juste à ce moment-là, un homme s’est approché de nous.
He was a small man and he was pretty old, probably seventy or more.	C’était un petit homme et il était assez vieux, peut-être soixante-dix ans ou plus.
He raised his hat politely and said to my mother, ‘Excuse me’.	Il a poliment enlevé son chapeau et a dit à ma mère : “Excusez-moi”.
‘I do hope you will excuse me…’.	“J’espère de tout coeur que vous m’excuserez…”
He had a fine white moustache and bushy white eyebrows and a wrinkly pink face.	Il avait une belle moustache blanche, des sourcils blancs, épais, et un visage rose et ridé.
He was sheltering under an umbrella which he held high over his head.	Il s’abritait sous un parapluie qu’il tenait haut au-dessus de sa tête.
