| I had a banana split and my mother had a cup of coffee. | J’ai pris un banana split et ma mère a pris une tasse de café. |

| They were gorgeous. | Ils étaient formidables. |
| ‘It isn’t going to stop’, my mother said. ‘We must get home’ | “Cela ne va pas s’arrêter” a dit ma mère. “Il faut que nous rentrions à la maison”. |
| We stood on the pavement in the rain, looking for a taxi. | Nous étions sur le trottoir sous la pluie, nous cherchions un taxi. |
| Lots of them came by but they all had passengers inside them. | Il en passait beaucoup mais ils avaient tous des clients. |
| ‘I wish we had a car with a chauffeur’, my mother said. | “J’aimerais avoir une voiture avec un chauffeur”, a dit ma mère. |
| Just then, a man came up to us. | Juste à ce moment-là, un homme s’est approché de nous. |
| He was a small man and he was pretty old, probably seventy or more. | C’était un petit homme et il était assez vieux, peut-être soixante-dix ans ou plus. |
| He raised his hat politely and said to my mother, ‘Excuse me’. | Il a poliment enlevé son chapeau et a dit à ma mère : “Excusez-moi”. |
| ‘I do hope you will excuse me…’. | “J’espère de tout coeur que vous m’excuserez…” |
| He had a fine white moustache and bushy white eyebrows and a wrinkly pink face. | Il avait une belle moustache blanche, des sourcils blancs, épais, et un visage rose et ridé. |
| He was sheltering under an umbrella which he held high over his head. | Il s’abritait sous un parapluie qu’il tenait haut au-dessus de sa tête. |
